Inheritance Tax changes welcomed

The introduction of a ‘transferable’ nil rate band between spouses means that it is possible for a widow or widower or civil partner to double up on the nil rate band ( £600,000 07/08 rising to £700,000 by 2010) .

It will mean that married couples and civil partners will be able to share their nil rate bands so that the proportion of any unused relief will be available to the surviving partner on their death. This will also be backdated to include those estates currently held by widows and widowers where the nil rate band was not fully used or used at all on the first death.

The changes will be a welcome relief to Middle England where many people were caught up in Inheritance tax due to the value of their homes.
