A Day in the Life of...

One year has gone past quickly and when you move into your third seat, it finally hits you that you are a second year trainee. So what is the difference between a first year trainee and a second year trainee?
It has got to be the added responsibility and the fact you are provided with opportunities to advise clients over the telephone, after of course a de-briefing with your supervisor. It is also rewarding to see all the skills I have learnt from my previous seats merge together, providing me with the confidence and logic to progress matters and analyse the facts of different cases.
This is the outline of my first day in my current employment seat.
08:45 - Arrive into the office, just in time for the morning tea round.
09:00 - 09:40 - Introduction to fellow colleagues and meeting with Head of Employment who provided a brief background on the work they did, the work I would be doing and diarising a weekly meeting to catch up/discuss any issues I may have.
09:40 - 10:00 - Received work from colleagues whilst in meeting. Prioritising work. Letter from other side solicitors needs responding to by tomorrow, started researching point on implied notice.
10:00 - 11:15 - Noting in case management discussion with colleague, judge and other side solicitors.
11:15 - 11:50 - Drafting letter to client to inform him of the outcome of the case management discussion and advising him to send further information so I could prepare the schedule of loss, due to be submitted to the Employment Tribunal in 7 days.
11:50 - 12:00 - Carrying on with earlier research.
12:00 - 12:20 - Call from client who wants to dismiss an employee who has been on long term sick. Took initial instructions and said I will call client back as I would just need to double-check the point.
12:20 - 12:35 - Research on long term sickness and dismissal.
12:35 - 12:50 - Explained the query to my supervisor and discussed research findings and points of advice. Supervisor checked I was happy to call client back and said if I had any further queries to come and see him.
12:50 - 13:05 - Call to client, provide options for the client to consider and my advice. Client was happy with the advice – no further queries.
13:05 - 14:00 - Lunch
14:00 - 15:00 - Attending meeting with a colleague in respect of an unfair dismissal claim lodged against our clients by a former employee. Noting key points in the meeting.
15:00 - 15:05 - Discuss key points with colleague and action to take next – noting deadline for response to be submitted at the Employment Tribunal is the following Wednesday. Colleague asked me to prepare the first draft to the response and to do a report on the advice provided.
15:05 - 15:30 - Checking emails and then started drafting letter on implied notice in response to other side solicitor’s letter.
15:30 - 16:15 - Noting in meeting with regards to a compromise agreement.
16:15 - 16:20 - Debrief with solicitor on the meeting and colleague asked me to draft the instructions part of the advice report.
16:20 - 16:40 - Finalising earlier letter on implied notice.
16:40 - 16:55 - Discussing draft letter with supervisor and discussing amendments.
16:55 - 17:30 - Researching background to unfair dismissal, in order to be able to draft response tomorrow.
