Government plans to phase out default retirement

divider

The Government has today published a consultation paper detailing their commitment to phasing out the default retirement age (“DRA”). The proposals envisage a six month transitional period with the full abolition of the DRA by October 2011.

Currently employers are able to require employees to retire once they reach the age of 65. This rule has been challenged by campaigners who believe that it is discriminatory and forces employees out of jobs when they are willing and able to work. The consultation paper identifies economic, social and health benefits as some of the advantages to people being able to work for longer.
The Government has invited responses to the consultation paper, “Phasing out the Default Retirement Age” by 21 October 2010.

We will bring you further information when it is released.
