Equality Bill completes passage through Parliament

divider

On 6 April 2010 the amendments to the Equality Bill that had previously been suggested by the House of Lords were agreed by the Commons, thereby completing the Bill’s long awaited passage through Parliament.

The Bill has now been passed to the Queen for her to give the Royal Assent. Once this is done the Bill will become the Equality Act 2010.

The Act is intended to be the means of harmonising the approach taken to different types of discrimination which is currently contained in a number of pieces of legislation and case law.

It is anticipated that the majority of the Act will come into force by October 2010. However, although the Bill has been largely supported by all of the major political parties, it is likely that, in the event of a change in Government following the General Election, a different approach may be taken as to which parts of the Act are implemented.
