Licensing
Temporary Events Notice |
| |
A Temporary Event Notice allows licensable activities to be carried out on a temporary basis where a Premises Licence would not be in force. Some examples of where a Temporary Event Notice might be used are for example the operation of an outside bar or to allow premises to open later than is authorised by their Premises Licence. A Temporary Event Notice is required to authorise on a temporary basis any of the licensable activities.
One of the most common problems with Temporary Event Notices is people do not realise the application period is ten working days before the event. In practice that is nearly three weeks, longer if there are bank Holidays in between. Missing this deadline is an all too common failing.

A Temporary Event Notice can be applied for in respect of events where there are up to 499 people present and they can last for a maximum of 96 hours. Only twelve Temporary Event Notices can be applied for in respect of any one place in a twelve month period (running from the 1 January to the 31 December) and, importantly, the total number of days in which a place can be used in any one year for a Temporary Event Notice is fifteen.
Anybody who holds a Personal Licence is entitled to apply for up to fifty Temporary Event Notices per year (although of course only twelve in respect of any one particular place) and anybody without a Personal Licence can apply for up to five per year.
The Police, who must be served with a copy of the application for a Temporary Event Notice, have the right to issue a counter notice objecting to the event within forty eight hours of receipt. In the event that they do this and their objection remains unwithdrawn there will have to be a hearing to resolve the matter.
